Support
Wensi Huang
My thesis work deals with the intimate relationship between parents and children. One of the intentions of my scaffolding-form artwork is to bring about the feeling of being supported, because I believe it plays an important role for many people. These supports include affection, comfort, companionship, and acceptance - which all lead to security. The support structure, generated automatically by the printing program’s algorithm, also simulates the nurturing behavior and the tight-knit bond between the parent and child. This scaffolding, which is normally removed afterwards, expresses the feelings of support that are so important but can be missing in the relationship.
The series of artworks symbolize the complexities of the parent-child relationship, expressing the tensions involved in achieving healthy attachment and balancing personal boundaries. At the same time, it brings the opportunity for reflection on the intimate relationships we are engaged in.
