Cooper O'Brien
In his glass sculptures, O’Brien diagrams the tension continually wrought between material and structure. Introducing elements of incident and intuition, he conscientiously disassembles his process and makes incongruous use of his materials. Through gestures of abandon, O’Brien leverages the unique viscosity of glass to disorient our ornamental and utilitarian expectations of the medium. Mortising these speculations in risk and limitation, the use of glass punctuates a material dialogue to articulate the fraught negotiation mediating the collective architecture of experience.
