William Toney, MFA 2024, Photography

My work attends to the abstractions that underlie modes of black cultural production in input and output. Research into histories and countercultural attempts to collectively actualize other ways of being in the world informs my practice. Spanning ideas from utopia, opacity, Afrofuturism, and further, I attempt to deconstruct notions of a singular blackness. Through photography, installation, and various media, my work operates as a viewfinder into considerations of an unimaginable future.
