Design a package for a cream which make something disappear: Houdini’s Vanishing Cream

For instance it could be real, such as back pain, cramps and headaches or it could be more inventive, such as annoying X boy friends, X girl friends, X bosses.

My invisibility potion was mainly based off of old apothecary tinctures. Many of my projects are illustration based so with this project I challenged myself to solely rely on type as my label.

Dream Cream Concept + Design by Grace Graves

In this project, I wanted to try something new by playing with a more minimal approach. In my opinion, the delicate typography coupled with the exciting collage creates a compelling final image. I am often drawn towards more lush visual treatments, so challenging myself to try something more light-handed was really interesting. This project was intended to encourage the user to recall their dreams and interpret them, so I included a dream interpretation guide as well to really round out that experience.

Houdini Vanishing Cream Concept + Design by Christa Jones

Houdini Vanishing Cream
Concept + Design by Christa Jones

The Houdini Miracle Cream was partially inspired by the musical Sweeney Todd. It is based on the stand and signage set up by the character Mr. Pirelli and his Miracle Elixer.  The design has old Victorian elements along with manipulated patterns inspired by William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement. The color scheme of the design came from Morris wallpapers, and then modified so the label didn’t appear too muted.

For the assignment Houdini, we were challenged to create a project that would magically make something disappear. I wanted to go a more realistic route and chose to create Houdini Magic Burn Balm. I was inspired by vintage matchboxes and hand drawn type.

Ouch Away Vanishing Cream

Ouch Away is an Organic Children's Skincare brand that features a set of vanishing creams: Scrapes & Bruises Overnight Vanishing Cream and Sunburn Vanishing Cream. My goal for the brand was to create a fun, friendly style that children wouldn't be scared of using. The illustrations are a focal point of Ouch Away, paired with the type-driven badge logo to create a cohesive feel for the brand.

Dr. Houdini crafted this magical cream to vanish any type of foot pain. The design is inspired by vintage medical scripts and anatomical illustrations. Instantly vanishing foot pain may be too good to be true so make sure to always check the side effects.

Houdini’s Magician Balm Concept + Design by Quyen Nghiem

Houdini’s Magician Balm
Concept + Design by Quyen Nghiem

This project was an attempt to create a design with colors and graphics reminiscent of early 20th century magician posters and type. The usage of a dark leather box was meant to convey a sense of mystery, almost like something you’d find in some dusty magic shop, next to the monkey paw.

Houdini Disappearing Cream Concept + Design by Justine Wollman

Houdini Disappearing Cream
Concept + Design by Justine Wollman

For this project, we had to create a disappearing cream based on the famous magician, Houdini. I initially thought about carnival posters for this project, but I decided to take a unique approach. I went with a traditional American tattoo aesthetic. I’ve always appreciated this tattooing style and felt it would be a good fit for this project. I Illustrated multiple little tattoos and kept the color pallet minimal.
