Design a brand identity for the following product: Spirit of choice.
It is no coincidence we named this premium tequila after one of the most fearsome figures in Aztec art. An exceptional blend of 3 year aged agave leaves, Coatlicue is exactly as the name implies- a powerful tequila crafted in the former Mexica altepetl Tenochtitlan, Mexico City.
With my artisanal liquor choice, I wanted to embody the effects and myths of the green fairy aspect of absinthe into my design, The bottle itself includes gold foiling and die cutting as well as an image of the fairy represented in my design.
For this project, I really wanted to experiment with narrative, and how a story could play out as a user turned the bottle in their hand. Inspired by the Honey Bourbon, I created a story with a bear and a beekeeper as well as a host of bees interacting with each other. I was really excited to see this illustration come to life on the bottle!
I chose to choose absinthe as my artisanal liquor for this project, because of the rich history behind the liquor that helped inform the design. Traditionally, absinthe is done in the art style of Art Nouveau, because the drink was invented in France. Instead, I chose to do a South American style, because it's where absinthe is made before being transported to France. I went this direction because I didn’t want the design to be too predictable, but I still wanted it to make sense for the packaging. The center logo references a compass to quietly call out the history of absinthe and its trades from South America to France. Along with this, the small chalice in the center is in the shape of a traditional absinthe glass, and the idea behind it is to showcase the wild colors of the absinthe behind the symbol. The border around the label is a nudge to South American history and inspired by textile patterns.
For the assignment artisanal liquor, I chose to do a chili infused mezcal, I named the liquor Mezclar which means to mix in Spanish.
Bentley Distillery's Hot Toddy is an Artisanal Whiskey inspired by the ingredients of the classic Hot Toddy drink. The bottle is designed to give the viewer a cozy, wintery feeling. Small illustrations of lemons, cinnamon, cloves, and other ingredients wrap around the bottle, adding a sense of fantasy and fun to this delicious drink.
Bark Whiskey is a maple infused artisanal liquor that has been family crafted since the 1930s. This type based design features key information about the blend while showcasing the rich color of the whiskey.
The concept of Ronin Artisanal Sake draws from the 18th century event known as the “47 Ronin” or the “Ako Incident”. It is known as “Chushingura”, which is the title given to the fictionalized accounts of that historical incident. The artwork borrows from ukiyo-e prints of that event and is also inspired by the work of Japanese graphic designer Tadanori Yokoo. The choice of using sake and the 47 Ronin legend contrasts traditional elements with modern Japanese design.
For this project, we had to create a unique Artisanal Liquor of our choice. I chose to do whiskey with a western theme, paying homage to the wild west cowboys. I wanted to create a nostalgic feeling with the typography and an illustration of a cowboy on his steed.
