Julia Votto + Ellen Sisti

"Eat Your Heart Out," Julia Votto, Ellen Sisti. 2022, Photopolymer, Flowers, Fabric, 12" x 6" x 6".

“Eat Your Heart Out” is a collaborative piece that speaks to the professional and artistic practices of both Julia Votto and Ellen Sisti, two contemporary artists who meld the worlds of tech, science and craft within their work.

A decorative bouquet of flowers is offered to the viewer, and only reveals its hidden symbolism upon closer inspection. Tucked away amidst the petals, teeth are waiting to be found by the viewer's eye. As the flowers begins to wither, and the petals begin to fall, the teeth reveal themselves. The work actively calls upon the symbolic troupe of Memento Mori or “Remember that you Die”. Thus, the work becomes an homage to what was and what will always be, the undying love that a bouquet of roses often symbolizes.
