Francis Brunell
“Greco-Roman Shangri-La” is a collagraph print that is a juxtaposition of classical Greco-Roman and modern architecture. 2020 is a year that has halted travel plans for many. Creating this collagraph print has awarded me the opportunity to bypass covid-19 travel restrictions. This print allows both artist and viewer to journey to a faraway realm and examine elements found in antiquity and the contemporary world. This architectonic print allows the viewer to leave their homes, putting behind new societal norms like social distancing, masks, and quarantining. “Greco-Roman Shangri-La” allows the viewer to become a nomad. One can fantasize about a future full of travel at any given moment.

Francis Brunell is printmaker from Warminster, Pennsylvania. He is currently a printmaking major at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture. Architecture, shape, and linear elements are common elements found in Francis’s work. His architectonic prints have elements typically found in antiquity, but also embrace those found in contemporary times. This dialogue he has established with architecture is out of a deep affinity towards the trade. Creating an interactive three-dimensional world by means of a two-dimensional medium is of great importance to his work.
