Born Yesterday

Em Kleaver

To be born yesterday is to be naïve, foolish, and easily tricked. Born yesterday is an exhibition of work that strives to find an interconnection between religious shortcomings, familial apocalypses, and the act of being deceived by institutions or people through containment vessels, glass and sculpture.

My work centers around my personal exploration of the unconscious and ephemeral. Working with imagery and ideas stemming from religious texts, mythology, and familial legends, I seek, more than anything, to understand the world around me better, through object making.

As a primarily ceramic artist, I find comfort in giving non-physical ideas and icons a permanent place, working with the nature of the ceramic object to tie down my understanding of interpersonal and global systems. I utilize a concept-driven practice with codified imagery, soft contrasts, and a variety of textures.
