Lesson #1: Become an Illustrator
In this lesson students were introduced to illustrator Chris Haughton and learned about his collage and illustration techniques. In the first week students learned how he cut simple shapes out of paper to create his characters, and illustrated an alternate ending for one of his books. In the second week of this project students built on what they learned last week by creating their own characters out of simple shapes just like Chris Haughton and many illustrators do. After this lesson students were left with an understanding on how a book is created and skills on how to make their own illustrations.
Lesson #2: History of Animation
In this lesson students learned about another job in the arts, animation! Students learned the history of hand drawn animation all the way from watching the first ever cartoon by Emil Cohl from over 100 years ago to watching the animators of Spongebob hand draw a favorite modern cartoon. Students were able to create a character and bring them to life by making a 2 page flipbook! Students were left with an understanding of how cartoons are created and new valuable art skills such as tracing and using a light-box.
